    Teaching Village School Children

Perhaps not so well understood outside of Cambodia was the total elimination of the Education system during the dark years of the 1970’s under the Khmer Rouge regime. Anyone who was a teacher or educated was murdered and all books and education materials were destroyed by this despotic regime. Schools were turned into torture chambers and prisons, or used to store equipment or livestock.

This left Cambodia in a terrible situation, even after the Khmer Rouge were removed, the country was under foreign occupation for the next ten years. The war did not really end until 1999. Most of the children who should have been educated in the 1980s and 1990s missed out on the opportunity; there just weren’t many schools and none in rural areas.

Despite a marvelous effort on behalf of the Cambodian people, often with the help of overseas assistance to re-build their Education System, there just is not the budget available, especially for rural schools. The Education system cannot keep up with the demand for educational facilities, especially in rural areas, and there just are not enough trained teachers for the number of students.

eOcambo Volunteer Programs has connected directly which a school that provides education to children who come from extremely poor families. As well as  providing the children with education they also supply at least one meal a day and  holistic care for their entire family.

Volunteers often have life changing experiences from helping in this particular school environment, which caters for very needy children from pre-school through primary and high school and also vocational training in hospitality after high school.

The school that eOcambo Volunteer Programs supports has around 800  pre- school, primary and high school students and is located within Siem Reap city district. The students come from villages outside Siem Reap.

Volunteers will assist the Cambodian teachers in class, with a special focus on English in various levels depending upon the age and capacity of the students.

In this school volunteers gain a very direct understanding of the children’s impoverished circumstances and how their contribution as a volunteer helps improve these children’s lives.

The school is less than 20 minutes from all eOcambo Hotels.

If you speak fluent English and have a willingness to help, then these are the only real skills required to volunteer in this school.

The school very much welcomes volunteers who have experience in education as they are keen for their local teachers to also learn some new skills.  An Education background will also help in planning activities for the students.

The school administration actively encourages volunteers to choose what age group of students they wish to be involved with, the emphasis is on flexibility to ensure volunteers gain the most from their experience.

Volunteers can choose to work the morning shift from 8am – 11am or the afternoon shift from 2pm – 6pm, or you are welcome to do both.

Volunteers support the local teachers; there are so many children in each class there is always a need for extra people to help with the learning activities.

Each child is provided one meal each day so volunteers assist the school staff to serve the meals and make certain all the children eat.

As with all eOcambo Volunteer Programs we welcome individuals or groups including school students to volunteer at the school improving the skills and education of the children.

It important to appreciate that before working with children all volunteers must complete Child Safe and School orientation training which is completed at the school before entering classrooms. If possible please provide proof from your home country that you are authorised to work with children and are not on any watch lists.

We ask that volunteers understand the fact that the school lacks resources in many areas and needs not just physical support but financial help which allows them to:

    1. Purchase basic school equipment and supplies – all provided free to the students
    2. Improve the school facilities for the students
    3. Make certain every child receives one nutritious meal daily.

All volunteers are required to pay a Volunteer Donation payment  which goes towards supporting the school’s on-going operational costs.

    • All new volunteers are required to pay a Volunteer Donation payment of $500 (USD) which goes towards supporting our on-going operational costs.
    • If you are a returning volunteer or if you have sponsored a child or student for more than twelve 12 months your Volunteer Donation Payment will be reduced to $375 (USD).

All donations go directly to the school.  eOcambo Volunteer Programs does not take this money and we  receive no fee or financial benefit from the school. Our role is to connect volunteers with this caring school who look after the poor children.

If volunteers wish to donate teaching and learning resources or clothes, even things as small as pens and pencils, they are very much appreciated and so desperately needed to help the teachers and students in their learning.

    New Volunteer – US $500

    Returning Volunteer – US $375

Please Note: This money is paid to the school, not to eOcambo Volunteers.
